Based on a self-guided online training program developed by the nationwide non-profit organization, Teachers Network, this class will give you an overall introduction to integrating technology into the K-12 curriculum. To complete this course you will do the online training followed by a written assessment. By the end of this course, you will have had the opportunity to:

  • Discover what is current and valuable on the Internet as it applies to your teaching.
  • Implement ways to integrate the discoveries into your daily planning.

Series: Teachers Network - Using the Internet in Your Classroom

These courses exist for the purpose of verifying that the enrolled teacher has studied, comprehended and incorporated the materials, ideas and information presented in the online training program on how to use the Internet. These courses can be taken individually or in any sequence if you are wanting to sign up for multiple courses.

The eight one-unit classes in the series are:

THE BASICS

  • EDU 508ZF - The Tech Savvy Teacher - An overall introduction to integrating technology into the K-12 curriculum.
  • EDU 508ZG - Information Literacy - Learn the crucial skill of evaluating websites for classroom use, how to share those skills with students, and how to find educative resources online.
  • EDU 508ZH - Internet Projects for the Classroom - An overview of three specific kinds of Internet-based classroom projects commonly used in the classroom.

WEB POWER

  • EDU 508ZI - All About WebQuests - This course takes participants through the stages to design a WebQuest Planner. Teachers create a detailed WebQuest outline as a culminating project.
  • EDU 508ZJ - Going Public: Writing & Publishing on the Web - This course illustrates how the web can be used as a literacy tool. Teachers create their own blog, publish to a wiki and use an online word processor called Writely.
  • EDU 508ZK - Stop, Look & Listen: Digital Audio-Visual Resources - This course will have participants explore digital images, Internet mapping tools, podcasting and streaming video on the web.
  • EDU 508ZL - Internet Safety - NEW - In this course participants will examine ways in which to help make students safer, more aware, and more careful with their online behaviors. This involves classroom management and teaching critical thinking skills to help students evaluate web sites.
  • EDU 508ZM - Digital Storytelling - NEW - In this course, participants will be exploring ways in which web-based stories can be written, told, and shared. We'll examine the digital storytelling movement, discuss its possible benefits in the classroom, explore some digital stories in a variety of media, and then learn how to plan and create a digital story using a medium of your choice.
After completing an online training program, you will mail written evidence on provided forms to USD showing your understanding and application of the concepts and strategies presented. The online training will include readings from the text and from online articles and will entail viewing scenes depicted in the CD.

Upon registering, you can access the course work for the written portion of your assignments, through your USD account on our website. Please allow 48 business hours after registering for e-mailed instructions to gain this access.

Required Materials to complete these courses include Teachers Network text book and double CD-ROM available for purchase through The Teachers Network Store.  Click here to order.

Both the text book and the double CD-ROM are necessary to complete these courses.  The same book and the same double CD-ROM are used in these courses, so only one copy of each is  needed if you are taking multiple courses from this series.

Hardware Requirements for your online training include:

  • Reliable access to a computer with an Internet connection
  • Web Browser: Internet Explorer or Netscape are recommended. Please note that users of Macs that run Safari or users of either Macs or PCs that run Firefox may have trouble registering with Teachers Network and that we recommend Internet Explorer or Netscape.

HOW DO I RECEIVE MY COURSE INSTRUCTIONS?

After registering for courses, allow 48 business hours and then your course instructions will be available through this website. Log in to our website by using your e-mail address and password. Go to MY ACCOUNT and the course instructions, which include instructions on how to log onto the Teachers Network self-guided online course, will be there for you to download and print. Please allow 48 business hours for this access.
